We want to have a clear view of the rear while driving. So we've modified a wireless camera and monitor set from China. When choosing: make sure the transmission and reception distance is sufficient.

We'll use the monitor's suction cup for the camera. We'll attach Velcro straps to the monitor so we can attach it to the rearview mirror.

We want the monitor in front of the existing rearview mirror, because that's where you tend to look, as if it were a regular rearview mirror. Therefore, we're adding an extra support next to the antenna connection. Soft foam will protect the mirror from scratches.

We'll attach the suction cup from the monitor to the camera using two M3 bolts. The suction cup will go on the rear window of the caravan. Both the monitor and camera are powered by 12V DC.

Initially, we powered the camera en route with a USB power bank. This required a special cable that converts the 5V= voltage from the power bank to 12V= to power the camera. (See the photo on the right, available from Chinese online stores.) We've since installed a 12V= connector in the back of the caravan. This allows the camera to run on the car battery. No power bank required.

When mounting the monitor, ensure that the mounting straps don't cover any camera or driver assistance sensors.

Karel J: I tried such a set last year, but the distance between the camera and monitor proved too great for reliable signal transmission. Apparently, it works for you, so my question is: what brand of camera and monitor did you use? Answer: I have no idea which brand. When choosing such a set, you can make sure it's suitable for trucks. Then the signal strength should generally be sufficient. Don't forget that both an Eriba caravan and a car form a Faraday cage.

 

Jutta: At the end, you say you're making a 12V connector for the constant power connection of the tow bar. But where? At the rear lights of the caravan? Answer: Twelve volts are available in the top corner between the overhead cabinets right at the back.
